[2026] Complete Guide to Applying for Your Residence Card (ARC) in Korea

Applying for your Residence Card (ARC) is the most critical step for any foreigner staying in Korea for more than 90 days. Based on my personal experience, I’ve organized the most essential tips, from finding your office to snagging last-minute reservations.

[2026] Complete Guide to Applying for Your Residence Card (ARC) in Korea

1️⃣ Check Your Jurisdiction

Before visiting an immigration office, you must identify which branch covers your residential area. Immigration services are strictly divided by district, so they will not accept your application if you go to the wrong branch.

  • How to check: Visit the HiKorea website → Enter your address → Find your designated immigration office.

  • Note: Your jurisdiction is based on your residential address. Even if you have a reservation, you will be turned away if it is the wrong office. Double-check before you leave!

2️⃣ Secret Tip for Reservations: "Same-Day Cancellations"

Making a reservation is mandatory for ARC applications. During peak seasons (March and September), slots can be fully booked for weeks. Don't give up!

  • Target Cancelled Slots: From my experience, check the reservation page again towards the end of the business day (late afternoon). Many people cancel their appointments at the last minute.

  • Check Frequently: Slots open up instantly when someone cancels for the following day. Making it a habit to refresh the HiKorea reservation page is the best way to snag a quick spot!

3️⃣ Step-by-Step Guide: What to Do at the Office

Immigration offices are often crowded and confusing. Follow this simple order to save time:

  1. Check the Appointment List: Find your name and time on the reservation list posted at the entrance.

  2. Fill Out the Application: Grab the form at the office and fill it out while waiting. (Doing this in advance saves about 10–15 minutes!)

  3. Prepare Your Documents:

    • Original Passport & Visa Copy

    • 1 Passport-sized Photo (3.5cm x 4.5cm, white background)

    • Proof of Residency (Lease agreement, dormitory certificate, etc.)

  4. Pay the Fee (Crucial!): Before your number is called, find the ATM inside the office. Pay the 35,000 KRW fee and get the receipt. Bringing cash is highly recommended.

  5. Submission & Fingerprinting: When your number is called, submit your documents and the fee receipt. Complete the fingerprinting process, and you are all set!

💡 Pro-Tips for a Smooth Application

  • Avoid Fines: You must apply within 90 days of your arrival. Failure to do so may result in a fine of up to 1,000,000 KRW.

  • Delivery Service: If you don't want to visit the office twice, ask for the mailing service (Taekbae) when you submit your documents. It costs a small extra fee (around 4,000 KRW) but saves you a second trip!
