Midterm Key Concepts Review
PART 1: Vocabulary & Grammar
단풍 구경 [dan-pung gu-gyeong] / 찾다 [chat-da]
Vocab: In autumn, people go to mountains for 단풍 구경 (Autumn foliage viewing). The verb 찾다 (to find) is often used elegantly to mean "to visit" a place (e.g., 산을 찾다 - to visit a mountain).
환경 오염 [hwan-gyeong o-yeom]
Vocab: Environmental pollution. It is categorized into 대기 오염 (Air pollution from cars/factories), 수질 오염 (Water pollution), and 토양 오염 (Soil pollution).
아무리 -아/어도
Grammar: Translates to "No matter how...". The adverb 아무리 is a natural pair for the -아/어도 grammar. (e.g., 아무리 바빠도 - No matter how busy you are).
V + -아/어 놓다 (두다)
Grammar: Indicates that an action is completed and its state is maintained, OR that an action is done in preparation for the future. (e.g., 선물을 사 놓았어요 - I bought a gift in advance).
V + -곤 하다
Grammar: Used to express an action that was/is done frequently or routinely. (e.g., 해수욕장에 가곤 했다 - I used to go to the beach often).
PART 2: Korean Society & Culture
유대 의식 [yu-dae ui-sik]
Society: Koreans value the community over the individual. This "Sense of solidarity" is why Koreans often say "우리 (Our/We)" instead of "내 (My)" (e.g., 우리나라 - Our country).
온돌 [on-dol]
Culture: The traditional Korean floor-heating system used in Hanok houses. Heat from the kitchen fire (아궁이) warms the floor, making it both a cooking and heating system.
Foreigner Voting Rights (외국인 선거권)
Law/Society: This is a highly tested concept! Foreigners CANNOT vote in Presidential (대선) or National Assembly (총선) elections. However, foreigners who have held an F-5 (Permanent Resident) visa for 3 years CAN vote in Local Elections (지방 선거).
